RESILIENCE ISN’T ABOUT BEING TOUGH – IT’S ABOUT BEING REAL

Resilience is one of those words we hear a lot, especially when life gets hard. Most of us have grown up thinking it means being strong, pushing through, or keeping it all together no matter what.
While this image of resilience can sound empowering, it’s also incomplete – and at times, unhelpful. In fact, this idea of being “tough” can sometimes add more pressure. When we tell ourselves we should be coping better, or that others have it worse, we can end up feeling ashamed or stuck – even when we’re doing the best we can.
What resilience really means
Resilience isn’t about pretending you’re okay when you’re not. It’s not about bouncing back quickly or staying positive all the time. Real resilience is about being honest with yourself, recognising your limits, and still showing up in the ways that matter.
Sometimes, being resilient means admitting you’re not okay. It might look like saying no, asking for help, or taking things slow. It’s less about powering through, and more about finding ways to care for yourself during tough times – even when that care looks a bit messy.
The myth of “pushing through”
We see it often: people trying to “push through” grief, trauma, burnout, or stress without giving themselves time to pause. While that can work short term, it usually catches up in the form of anxiety or exhaustion.
And here’s the thing – you don’t need to be constantly strong to be resilient. You just need to do what you can, when you can.
Building resilience, gently
At Mindful Living, we support people in building resilience in a way that’s gentle, practical, and grounded. Sometimes that happens in one-on-one counselling, and other times through our EMDR programs – whether that’s individual sessions, group work, or intensives.
We focus on things like calming the nervous system, making sense of experiences, and developing tools to manage life’s ups and downs. There’s no pressure to “fix” everything – just support to explore what you need, in your own time.
A kinder approach
So, if you’ve ever felt like you’re not coping the “right” way – know that there’s no right way. Resilience isn’t about being perfect or getting it all done. It’s about being real, staying curious, and giving yourself the same care you’d offer a friend.
If you’re interested in exploring this with one of our team, or you’re supporting someone who could benefit from trauma-informed care, we welcome you to get in touch. We’re here when you need.
